thanks for posting this! the vet i took Dewey to isn't on the list ... but he also didn't seem TOO knowledgable. He knew a lot about chinchilla health, but not about chinchilla basics.

Yeah, he was the one that told me to get a female cage mate for Dewey (um, no) ...and to go ahead and feed him roughage (like broccoli stems and carrot tops) ...(again, um, no). He did do well with actual health things though...he checked Dewey's weight, teeth, privates, eyes, ears, nose, limbs, and knew all about barbering.
I called the vet this site listed - and he actually charges less, and is available more often. Then I realized it's the same vet I had taken my guinea pig too back when I was like 16 years old! So I'm excited. I wanna get both chins back into the vet for a check up within a few weeks.

Thanks for this Ann! One of the 'Chicago' vets listed....exoticpetvet.com (actually in Skokie)... I wouldn't recommend for chins. Then, looking at their chinchilla care sheet, it included this: Treats such as fresh vegetables or herbs can be offered but should be fed in limited quantities. A diet containing too many vegetables can result in diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset. Therefore, we recommend a daily regimen of no more than 1 cup of herbs (mint, basil, oregano, cilantro or thyme) or leafy green vegetables (romaine, butter crunch or red leaf lettuce, carrot tops or dandelion greens) for your chinchilla. Feed the same foods consistently in order to prevent digestive upset, and avoid gas-forming vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. (underline mine) !!!!! There's no e-mail, so I'm going to call! ;D Can you imagine...a CUP of fresh veggies!? Anyway, I use Animal House (also listed), they are great and LOVE chinchillas! I suppose, I will be there soon! nancy

Nancy, Thanks and you're welcome. A cup of veggies/herbs seems ridiculous to me. I know that's what they eat in the wild, but how long do they live in the wild? I found that, while vets are good for medical issues, many do not know much about animal nutrition. Case in point: I rescued a starling. No vet, not even avian vets knew about the nutrition requirements. I had to go on the web and join a Board of people, many of them rescuers, to find out what to feed her. I found myself teaching the vets about nutrition. Go figure. Hugs, Ann

Ann: My vet is not on this list and the other 12 are over an hour away. My vet is over an hour away also, I was hoping for someone closer. Does anyone know of an exotic vet in New Haven County, CT? regards, Dani

Hi everyone my name is Anneliese here is a Vet out on Long Island who specializes in exotic animals.
Island Exotic Veterinary Care Dr. Heidi Hoefer 591 East Jericho Turnpike Huntington Sta, NY 11746 631-424-0300
I've taken Chili there to get neutered and Dr. Heidi and her staff were absolutely wonderful. They gave such love and attention to my Chili Wilie McSilly it was like as if they were his owners. She has many Chinny clients from NY. Hope this helps.

For those who don't know of any exotic vets in their area or who are having problems finding one... I think it a good idea to ask a regular vet if they know of any.

I looked at the California Vets and have used three thus far.
I love the facility at Bishop Ranch. It is located in San Ramon, near Pleasanton and Livermore in northern California. There is one vet listed there, but my guys have also seen Dr. Leeanne Taylor, who is as sweet as can be.
Another one you have listed in All About Pets in San Francisco. They too are also great and I have used their doctors as well. It is important to note, however, that All About Pets is only an emergency clinic, as their hours are for the folks that have the night emergencies (I think it was something like 8 PM - 8 AM... and no, I don't have that backwards!). I think they are 24 hours on the weekend, though.
The one that you are missing from my area is Adobe Pet Hospital in Los Gatos, CA (near Palo Alto/San Jose, sort of). The rescue where I got some of my buddies from works with them, and they have several doctors with extensive chinchilla knowledge. Also, once a year, the rescue puts on a Chinchilla Health Day, where for $5 a chinchilla you can get a basic work up of your little guys (check the poop samples, weight, ears and teeth, etc) with the money going back to funding the rescue, and they only have chinchillas in the office during that day, except of course for emergencies.
