Hello all, I am a brand new chin owner. I just adopted my chinchilla 3 weeks ago from craigslist. I was wondering if anyone knows a good online site or petstore that sells fruit branches that my chin can use for climbing and chewing. And can I just go out to the woods, and cut the bark off a pine branch and soak it in fruit juice?? Thanks! ;D

Don't just cut a branch in the woods. There are certain woods that are safe and others are not. There's a "safe woods" list on another site. I'll post that link in a sec.

Vanessa id Be real careful around here,.,they've sprayed for west nile in the valley a lot. Ive never heard of chins eating "fruit "branches..or climbing them... I get willow sticks from my friend Barbara in the UK www.cheekychinchillas.comand there are some great places the people here have turned me onto lonestarchinchillas, fortunatechins, rivendell etc Since joining this group, I had to make a separate bank account for the chins and GP's ha ha Lots of great people on here, and they are very knowledgeable ... , one of our administrators and overall fun girl might be able to provide you links instead of you working through 100's of posts she is pokeplaza here I use dried fruit from Albertsons in Lehi... from (nutty guys) which is usually near the bread aisle. Toodles

www.lonestarchinchilla.com has apple twigs that have been baked to be free from parasites. You can't use any woods that have been exposed to pesticides or varnishes or anything like that, and no fruit woods from pitted fruit trees, like cherries or peach or plum trees... etc. Apple wood, grapevine, untreated pine, and a few other are safe for chins to chew. The safest way is to purchase them from a chin breeder who sells supplies.

Wow, this is an awesome site. I get a reply so fast! Thanks critterrx for the site on safe woods. That is a very good site. And thanks for that website. I saw a lot of small twigs and stuff, but is there anything with large branches that I can use as climbing devices? jamie- I looked through that site but I couldn't find willow sticks. Where is it specifically? I may be blind. lol poka- I heard that chinchillas like fruit branches best...but now I'm starting to wonder if that is a rumour. I also heard you can soak them in canned fruit juice to make them particularly yummy and enticing to chew. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks guys!!!

(Jamie, they'll just think they have RATS!!)
Vanessa, I haven't heard anything about the fruit juice thing, but yes, they like fruit woods the best, mostly apple and pear branches. You have to have pesticide free trees, cut the branches, boil them first and then dry them in the oven on a very low setting. If it's not done properly they will grow a nasty white mold on them. All in all it's usually easier to buy them from someone else who did all the work!
Tara, Jamie Lynn almost always has the apple "perches" and I think someone else on Chins N Quills had HUGE apple branches for sale once, to use like in the whole cage.. but I seem to recall most people were saying that was useless for chins and more suitable for birds. Chinchillas (like we've all noticed) are kind of spastic and having a flat surface like a ledge to leap on reduces their chances of missing their footing and plummeting to the bottom of the cage.

He's pretty cool alright! My sister has 2 of those baby turtles that will end up being Giant Tortoises and live a hundred years. WHAT she was thinking, I just don't know, but they are cute!

I got to raise a desert tortoise named Rosebud for a year. My stepmother's daughter has had one for about 20 years and we babysat one year for her. Rosebud is a cutie but spends at least half the year hibernating outside in the yard in a dirt cave. When she ate her lettuce and stuff, it looked just like a dinosaur.
